Ryan Gosling's latest blockbuster has been met with criticism from some viewers following a controversial joke about Amber Heard and Johnny Depp.

The Fall Guy hit movie theaters yesterday (May 2), and while it is already boasting an impressive 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, some viewers have been left far from impressed.

The movie stars Gosling as a movie stunt actor, who teams up with Emily Blunt to go on an adventure that's bigger than any film he's ever starred in. However, one joke in the movie had left fans flocking to X and calling for others to boycott the flick.

So, what's caused such an uproar? Well, in the David Leitch-directed action-comedy, there's one scene where Hannah Waddingham’s character, Gail, walks into a messy trailer says to Emily Blunt’s character, Jody: “It’s like Amber and Johnny were just in here.”

The joke is a reference to Depp and Heard's volatile relationship, which played out for the public to see when they both took legal action against the other in the now-infamous defamation lawsuit back in 2022.

The trial saw both actors accuse the other of multiple unsavory and abusive acts - with the jury eventually unanimously siding with Depp that Heard had libeled him in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post.

Due to the sensitive nature of the trial, the joke in the movie was not received well by some.

One person wrote on X: "So the fall guy has a joke where they make fun of the abuse amber heard suffered while she dated johnny depp. boycott this flop movie."

"'The fall guy' made a distasteful 'joke' about the domestic abuse amber suffered at the hands of johnny. it’s 2024, why are we writing these kinds of lines into movies? nasty work," another person tweeted.

One X user wrote that the movie “allegedly makes a cheap Amber / J*hnny joke. would love to ask the writer what he thinks is so funny about domestic violence.”

"2024 and we're putting [domestic violence] jokes into our action comedies i guess," added another.

Others voiced their disappointment at actress Hannah Waddingham for saying the line in the first place, with one viewer tweeting: "I'm so disappointed in Hannah for saying the line. I get it's a character, but I always held her in such high regard so this is unfortunate to hear."

In an interview with The Today Show, Waddingham actually pointed out that her character is supposed to be "revolting" - so this is the sort of comment she would say.

"She's very self-serving. Her needle on her moral compass is somewhere else," the Ted Lasso star said.

So, will you be watching the movie?
