A mother-in-law has been praised for turning down a bride's request for her wedding - despite leaving her future daughter-in-law upset.

Weddings are often one of the happiest days of a couple's life - but they can also be pretty stressful, too.

From booking the perfect venue to making sure to stick to the budget (those things can cost a small fortune), there's lots that goes into planning the perfect day.

One bride was left in tears after asking her mother-in-law to make her a 'cookie table' - only to be told a firm "no"... and people are totally on the MIL's side.

The unnamed mother-in-law took to Reddit's infamous "Am I The A**hole" forum to ask if she was in the wrong for turning down the bride's wild request.

She explained: "My son is marrying Wendy and the wedding is this summer. She is not close to her own mother for multiple reason and is pushing hard to have me fill in the gap.

"I am not comfortable with it at all especially with how hard she is pushing. She has multiple times overstepped boundaries such as inviting herself along, discussing very personal issues, very touchy etc…."

She explained that due to these reasons, she and her son's bride-to-be aren't close, adding: "And my own daughters are not a huge fan of her."

With the couple planning their wedding at the moment, 'Wendy' asked her mother-in-law for a special request for the big day.

"She asked me this week if I would make the cookie table for the wedding. It is something the brides own mother would do with other female relatives.

"This is the first time hearing about this tradition and I did some research. I would have to make over a thousand cookies from scratch to feed the wedding guest.

"I asked my daughters if they wanted to do it and it was a strong no."

After finding out that she would have to make a thousand cookies on her own, the mother-in-law explained: "I informed her that I can not do it, it is way to much work and I don’t have the time. She told me okay and I thought that was it."

However, it unfortunately wasn't the end of the story, as she added: "My son called me up and told me I am a huge jerk. That Wendy has been crying about it and I should step up. I am still refusing to do it."

She added that the daughter-in-law had told her she wanted between 1000 and 1200 cookies made, and that as her own side of the family won't help and her daughters didn't want to do it, it would be her making all of those cookies on her own.

She then asked whether she was the "a**hole" in the situation for saying no, to which she received an outpouring of support.

Commenters wrote: "When someone calls you after you refused and insults you it is when you know that you made a right choice. NTA [Not the a**hole]. It always fascinates me how people think (in this case your son) - oh, my mom refused so now I will call names, offend and insult her so she will have to change her mind. Does this approach ever work because IMO it only achieves exactly the opposite."

Others added: "NTA. It is not your job to satisfy Wendy or step in , in place of her mother. It’s not your fault that they’re not close. Your son is TA for not calling her out on her bs now & many times before. Want 1,000 cookies? Buy them or ask your mom!"

Another wrote: "NTA - bake 1,000 cookies is kind of a big ask. I think you have some issues and maybe both of you arent handling your relationship well. But, yeah cookies though? Thats def too much."

Many believed the problem between the bride and mother-in-law was deeper than just the cookies. Credit: JayKay57/Getty Images

Some sided with the bride, however, writing: "YTA- you know damn well it’s not about the cookies. You don’t like her, you want her to know it, you would have said no no matter what the request was. I hope you know if your son is a decent guy you can kiss your relationship with him goodbye if you keep this c**p up."

Another wrote: "N T A for not wanting to make 1000 cookies but YTA in general for your attitude. This woman is joining your family and you seem to have nothing but contempt for her."
