Netlfix's American Nightmare has quickly become one of the most talked about true crime documentaries social media, with many voicing their support for the "real hero" from the chilling story.

The true crime documentary - which, as of this writing, is currently the most-watched show on Netflix globally - tells the story of a woman's frightening abduction and the police's ensuing refusal to believe that it was real.

Denise Huskins was 29 when she was drugged, abducted, and held for ransom by a man back in 2015. Her boyfriend, Aaron Quinn, was also drugged and blacked out but when he gained consciousness, he was reeling from a message he got from the alleged kidnapper(s) that delayed him from going to the police.

However, when he finally realized that he could not rescue his girlfriend by himself, he turned to the authorities. Sadly, officers accused him, and then later accused Huskins, of staging the entire ordeal. Watch the American Nightmare trailer below:

The couple suffered for months before their hero, police officer Misty Carausu, came around to solve the case after noticing similar resemblances between Huskins' case and the one she was working on in Dublin, California.

When trying to pass the urgent message on to the department that was supposed to be handling the unsolved case, she quickly realized that the officers there weren't taking it seriously and pursued it further.

In the end, she managed to help Huskins and Quinn claim their innocence and arrest the perpetrator, Matthew Muller.

Muller had been involved in other cases of this nature, using signature swim goggles, to make sure his victims could not see a thing.

Social media users took to X, formerly Twitter, to praise the "hero", stating that without Carausu and her commitment to solving the case.

"Misty Carausu is legit the real MVP. We need sooo many more like her. The way law enforcement handled Denise & Tracey was disgusting! What the actual f***?! #AmericanNightmare," wrote one user.

"God bless Misty Carausu. She's proof that we need more women in male-dominated spaces. #AmericanNightmare," another added.

"How crazy is it that Mat Mustard won officer of the year after botching the Quinn-Huskins case and #MistyCarausu got no awards for her stellar police work doing the type of investigation he could have/should have done? #AmericanNightmare," a third pointed out.

Others also expressed their anger at the entire handling of the case with this user describing the officer as a "hero".

"Just finished #AmericanNightmare and I’m going to need a minute to get my blood pressure back down. Absolutely rage inducing ineptitude from the Vallejo PD and the FBI. Misty Carausu is an absolute hero though."

People like Carausu certainly fill us all with hope for humanity.

American Nightmare is now available to watch on Netflix now.
