Social media influencer Elena Larrea has tragically died suddenly at the age of 31, as her fans rushed to pay tribute.

Larrea was deeply committed to safeguarding horses from mistreatment and neglect. She established a sanctuary named Cuacolandia in 2017 and even turned to platforms like OnlyFans to generate funds for the sanctuary's operations.

Cuacolandia, the horse sanctuary that Larrea founded, vowed to honor Larrea's legacy, pledging to uphold her vision for animal welfare.

"We will promote her legacy and love so that our horses, donkeys, and mules live in freedom and in adequate conditions in Mexico and here, our sanctuary for horses rescued from abuse and abandonment," they said, per PEOPLE.

The sanctuary broke the news of her death, stating: "With deep regret, we inform you of the departure of Elena Larrea, president and founder of Cuacolandia who unfortunately yesterday - Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 3:30PM."

The statement continued to reveal her cause of death while expressing their deep sorrow for the passing of their founder.

The sanctuary revealed that Larrea died due to a "pulmonary thrombosis that caused a clot in the lung."

As per the Mayo Clinic: "A pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a blood clot gets stuck in an artery in the lung, blocking blood flow to part of the lung."

Following the news of her passing, tributes poured in from Larrea's circle of friends and admirers.

Mexican actress Sylvia Pasquel reminisced about Larrea's impact, stating: "You left a beautiful mark on everyone we met, you were an angel on earth for many… Your example and legacy will continue to inspire those of us who seek a better world for animals."

Music artist Rich Vagos also paid homage to Larrea, describing her as a "fighter, brave, strong, activist, and irreverent," and highlighting her unwavering dedication to animal protection.

Even the Governor of Puebla, Sergio Salomón, recognized Larrea's remarkable contributions. "I deeply regret the death of Elena Larrea, a tireless fighter for the defense of animal welfare," he shared on X (formerly Twitter). "The rescue of thousands of horses in conditions of abuse leaves testimony to her life and work."

"On behalf of the Government of Puebla we extend our solidarity hug to her family and friends."

Salomón added that "through the Ministry of the Environment, we will guarantee the protection of the specimens found in Cuacolandia, derived from procedures of the Animal Welfare Institute.

"Likewise, we will provide all the necessary help so that other horses are cared for by the authorities that rescued them as well as the rest of the horses, prioritizing their well-being at all time," he continued. "We will follow your example. Rest in peace, Elena."

Other tributes poured in from fans, as one person commented on Larrea's most recent Instagram post: "God and Mexicans allow your legacy to continue, you are one in a million @elenaypunto no one can replace you but what they can do is continue your wonderful work."

A second person said: "Rest in peace beautiful and fly high!! It’s amazing how in an instant everything changes and people you never imagine leave this life."

Our thoughts are with Larrea's loved ones at this time.
