A man has been praised online for standing his ground and refusing to give up his plane seat for a pair of newlyweds heading on their honeymoon.

Taking to Reddit's infamous "Am I The A**hole" subforum, the man - who goes by the username Scrapped85 on the site - said he felt like a "villain" after telling the couple that he would not swap seats with them.

He wrote in his post: "So here's the thing, I booked a window seat, and beside me was a lady who is the wife of the guy on the seat in the middle row. Apparently, they are newlyweds and they want to be seated together.

"They asked me if they can change seats with me to which I politely refused and gave them my reasons. One of the reason was my size and aisle traffic. I always get bumped by someone when I am on the aisle seat."

He then went on to recall a time he was on an aisle seat and he injured his elbow after one of the trolleys hit into his arm. "I avoided the aisle seat ever since,"  he said.

Scrapped85 also revealed that the flight in question was one of three flights he took that day - and was the longest one. All he wanted to do was sleep and relax, he told his fellow Reddit users.

What's worse, the passenger who was sat with the groom also tried to persuade him to swap seats, apparently "making a scene" as though the Reddit poster was a "scrooge in the couple's honeymoon."

Despite the pressure he was under, Scrapped85 refused to budge.

He explained: "All the people around me, including the crew, looked like they hate me. Am I wrong to refuse changing my seat? In my opinion, if it is your honeymoon, I would assume that you made your reservations in advance, why the hell didn't you book seats where you will be seated together in advance instead of bothering other passengers?"

Doubling down on his stance, he asked: "Should other passengers adjust because it is your honeymoon? When I had my honeymoon, I prebooked my seats and never bothered anyone."

However, Scrapped85 did admit to thinking his actions may have been "selfish".

He then proceeded to ask his fellow Reddit users what their opinions were.

The consensus in the comments was that Scrapped85 was not the "a**hole" in this situation.

One person wrote: "NTA [Not The A**hole]. You booked your specific seat. This couple did not, which was pretty stupid of them to do so. You are under no obligation to change your seat due to other people's failure to plan better.

"I once booked an aisle seat as I have health issues and also have a kidney problem and need easy access to the bathroom (if someone is asleep in that seat I can't pass). Someone once asked me to swap and I answered... 'unless you want to be peed on... no.'"

Another agreed: "NTA. Every time this story comes up the person is not the a**hole for refusing to move. You booked your seat specially. Sucks to be them but not your problem. Also seriously, aisle seat guy? Now why couldn't he move?"

A third stated: "NTA. I always get aisle seats because of flying anxiety and had a mom/daughter ask me to trade seats so they could sit together which would have put me in a center seat. They were so p***ed when I politely explained why I wouldn’t move. I don’t get why people can’t reserve the seats they want - is it they are cheaping out and relying on other people to switch with them?"
