Be prepared to be put off of chicken forever.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes it's best to just not know where our food comes from because ignorance is bliss.

But when it starts wriggling around on the plate, it can get pretty hard to ignore and can certainly be very offputting.

In a scene straight out of a horror movie, a piece of raw meat seems to defy logic as it crawls off a diner's plate before dramatically plummeting to the floor.

The spine-chilling footage, originally shared on Facebook by Rie Phillips of Florida, has since been shared across the internet, and has left millions of people in disbelief.

The video captures a seemingly ordinary restaurant setting with a plate of raw meat resting alongside other dishes.

Suddenly, without warning, the meat starts to inch forward, eventually sliding off the plate to the dismay of onlookers, accompanied by a woman's scream.

In fairness, I'd scream too.

The unsettling scene unfolds as the meat spasms and writhes, prompting theories ranging from strings being attached to the meat to the possibility of it being a skinned frog still exhibiting signs of life.

Yikes.

It's not been confirmed what the meat in the video is and how exactly this horrifying movement came about.

If this wasn't enough to put you off eating forever, how about a video of freshly cut meat "spasming"?

The unsettling clip, shared on the @weirdterrifying account, features a man, presumably a butcher, showcasing a slab of meat to the camera.

As the meat is coated with salt - a common practice to draw out surface water and aid preservation - it unexpectedly begins to convulse.

The disturbing sight has left viewers questioning their dietary choices, with some expressing intentions to transition to a plant-based diet permanently.

Reacting to the video on X, one user exclaimed: "I’m a vegetarian now," while another echoed similar sentiments, stating: "Planning vegetarian diet from now on, that’s horrible!!"

A third person said: "Well, this picture could make me give up eating meat."

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) weighed in, urging viewers to reconsider their meat consumption habits. "Here’s a reminder that your meat was once a living being. Horrified? Go vegan," they said in a post.

Fortunately, there's a scientific explanation behind the unsettling phenomenon.

According to NPR, the addition of salt or salty substances like soy sauce to freshly slaughtered meat initiates a chemical reaction that triggers spasms in the intact and still-functioning muscles.

"Extra sodium (the salt) sends ions to the cell that trigger the cell to open up, creating a cascade of chemical activities that causes the cell to fire, so the muscle twitches," explained Robert Krulwich.

Lv Suwen, an expert from the local animal health department, offered reassurance, stating: "You can rest assured, this piece of meat is very fresh and is from a freshly slaughtered animal," as reported by Daily Mail.

"The central nervous system is dead but the nerve-endings in the muscles are still firing resulting in the jumping, because the nerves are not yet dead. This will stop after a short time," she added.
