A life-changing sum has been raised for a father who was jailed for 22 months after tacking burglars who'd targeted his home - while the thieves avoided a prison sentence.

Adam White, 34, from Eggington in the UK, was jailed in February for causing serious injury by dangerous driving after he ran Taylor Benford and Ryan Paul, both 25, off the road as they tried to escape with a stolen motorbike. The pair received suspended sentences for their crimes.

While chasing Benford and Paul in his car, White lost control of his vehicle after misjudging "how sharp" a bend in the road was, and caused serious injuries to the pair after plowing into them.

His story was featured on 24 Hours in Police Custody on Channel 4 in the UK at the end of November, leaving viewers outraged that White received jail time while the burglars were ordered to do 200 hours of community service.

Police bodycam footage from the night of the incident, which occurred in 2019, shows White asking police as he is arrested: "Am I in trouble? I’m not going to prison for this am I?”

White was sentenced to 22 months in jail in February of this year, but Benford and Paul - who both have a string of past convictions - including theft, reckless driving, criminal damage, shoplifting, and drug dealing - were spared time behind bars.

The case moved viewers to want to help White and his family, with a GoFundMe page set up for his wife, Lindsay White, having raised £150,000 ($184,000 USD) at the time of writing.

Over 9,000 people had made donations and sent supportive messages to help the family, with the fundraiser claiming White had "spent £50k" ($61,000) of his "life savings" amid the court case.

White's wife shared an update on the page, thanking viewers for their support, writing: "We are overwhelmed with the support that everyone has given us and I cannot thank you all enough.

"We truly can't believe how generous and thoughtful all our donors are. Every word of support has encouraged us to remain strong and has put a warmth in our hearts that we thought lost 3 years ago."

She added: "We feel so incredibly thankful for the money everyone has raised to help us get back our losses, and thanks to all of you, we have.

"At this stage I would like to take this opportunity to say to anyone who wishes to donate to the page, we will be passing on any future funds from now to Charity, to honor the loss of our baby. We will update further information on the page shortly.

"Again, thank you all so much, it is time for us to move forward and start afresh with the life you all have given us back."
